Pride of Cougar (POC) Volunteer Day
Last Friday we held our first POC Day of this school year. We had some amazing parents and friends join us to work on projects for teachers, move supplies, and create an updated space for volunteers to work.
One parent took the lead in painting a space for our volunteers to work – she’s a rockstar!!
Others cut out paper trees for decorating and teacher wish lists, cut and sorted projects for teachers, laminated cards and art projects – we made the most of all the generous help!
We even had a little helper in the morning before kindergarten:
Thank you to everyone that participated! We appreciate any time you can give to the school either with other parent volunteers or working in classrooms.
You help make YCES a great place for our children!

Books for Students
And, the best part? Between now and December 31st the Umpqua Bank Charitable Foundation will match the first 20,000 books donated, for a total of $50,000. So hey, you can help twice as many kids! It's fast, it's easy, it's secure. The donated books will be delivered to schools in early 2015.
So if you're so inclined (and we hope you are), follow the link, choose YCES from the list of elementary schools (we're at the very bottom!), and help build literacy in our community.
And thanks!

Collecting Pledges
Don't forget to have your kiddos bring in their Walk a Thon pledge envelopes! We'll be collecting and counting them on Monday and Friday mornings until the deadline on October 30th.
If you haven't seen it yet, we're keeping track of our school totals on the bulletin board next to the office off of the main hallway. Ms. Imus's class is in the lead, with Mrs. Schulze's class close behind! We're over halfway to our goal of $32,000!
Great job YCES!

Reading–A Whole New World!
We’ve all heard how important reading is in school and consequently in life. From an early age, we learn letters and how to spell our name – then we learn what each letter sounds like – and then put them together to make the words we use every day.
But have you stopped to think about how your world might be if you couldn’t read?
What challenges you might face?
How much more difficult things would be – even just going to the grocery store?
Because reading is so important in our everyday lives, wouldn’t it be great if we taught our kids how to enjoy it? When we like what we do, we want to do it more. It’s not work then – it’s fun!
This is a great article about helping kids enjoy reading. (And even parents too!)
Ways to Spark a Love for Reading
Do you have other suggestions for parents? Please share them in our comment section! We would love to hear what works for you.

When Parents Get Involved
There are countless studies that show how getting involved in your children’s education can make a huge difference in their ability to learn and grow. It might just be that one ingredient that’s needed for your child!
Here is an interesting article (that was written a few years back) that might give you some ideas of how to be involved even if your time is extremely limited:
38 Ways to Get Involved in the Classroom
When your kids know that you care about their education, they will too!!!

Helpful Information
8 Things Teachers Want You To Know
By Vicki LittleOn the first day of Kindergarten, our school has a little tissue tea for new parents where they can eat refreshments, cry a bit, write a letter to their child and meet other parents. The principal tells parents the same thing every year: “We promise to believe only half of what your student tells us happens at home, if you promise to believe only half of what they tell you happens at school.” Here are 8 other things that your child’s teacher would like you to know:
1) Learning is a process, not a letter. The teachers I’ve talked to say they wish parents would realize that one bad grade doesn’t mean that their student is failing. Sometimes the particular assignment is challenging, or maybe they just had a bad day. Your child’s teacher isn’t ignoring the grade; they will address it as needed. But a child’s low score on a pop quiz isn’t a reason to call your local tutoring center, either.
2) Grades are not a negotiation. If you are concerned about a grade, set up a meeting and talk with the teacher, but don’t expect to “negotiate” a new grade. Be proactive in getting ideas on how to help your child and be willing to schedule time for tutoring or working with them.
3) Accountability is a valuable lesson. Don’t save your kid at every turn! If they continue to forget their homework and you keep bringing it to them, they aren’t learning anything. Teachers need parents’ help in teaching the kids responsibility and accountability.
4) Homework is not a test. It is practice. Let your child make some mistakes! Teachers said they do want parents to participate in homework and know what their child is doing, but don’t help too much. If they don’t look over their work or write complete sentences, let them learn through consequences.
5) Procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency for the teachers. Stay on top of things. Don’t wait until the end of the year, when it is too late, to do anything to show concern over your child’s grades, reading level, or social issues at school.
6) Communication is a two-way street. Teachers really aren’t out to get your child. It is possible that they simply have no idea your student is being bullied or sad during lunch. Go to the teacher first with an open mind. Ask for suggestions and let them know what is going on. Going over their head to the principal first will only result in the principal asking if you have talked to the teacher.
7) Keep a routine (and an early bedtime). Kids definitely have a harder time learning when they are tired, and their grades will reflect this. Plus, they are less likely to follow directions and get along with their peers.
8) Be involved. This was something all teachers mentioned. Know what is happening in the classroom, in the school, with homework and with your child. No one is saying that you need to serve as PTO president, but talking with your child and coming to community nights — or even just volunteering 20 minutes a month in the classroom — can go a long way.
Are you a teacher? What do you want parents to know? Or if you are a parent, what would you like to say to teachers?

YCES Walk-a-Thon is coming!!!
Are you ready??? Mark your calendars … our annual Walk a Thon is coming! This year we’re shaking things up a bit … join us for the
2014 Cougar Color Vibe
Our entire student body will walk or run laps around the school track to raise funds for YCES! This year there will be a little color involved.
(Ask your kids about the assembly we had on Friday!)
Before that, they’ll ask their families and friends for sponsorship or donations for the one and only fundraiser we have each year.
Please help our students obtain donations to earn a shirt as well as various prizes – even lunch or ice cream with the Principal!
The Walk-a-Thon this year is being held on:
Thursday - October 9th
Donations of at least $10 turned in by Tuesday, October 7th earns a student a T-shirt to wear on the day of the event.
Donations of at least $50 turned in by the final collection date (October 30th) earns a student a ticket to win one of many gifts donated by our amazing supporters!
Our children brought home envelopes from school on Friday to begin fundraising. Keep on the lookout for notes with more information coming home the next few weeks.
And did you hear? We can now accept debit and credit donations through Paypal! See the link in the left column on this blog or go to paypal.com and donate to ycptoinfo@gmail.com.

Welcome to School Everyone!
We hope you've all had a great first few days of school! There's activity in the hallways and a buzz in the air - school is back in session!!
Please make sure to check with your children each evening to find out if there is any paperwork that needs to be signed and returned to school. Many teachers will send home things just once per week, but occasionally there is random information sent home that we need to review and return.
You should have already seen a yellow piece of paper from Yamhill Carlton School District called a "Student Information Form". Please make sure to complete and return this so that we can comply with federal regulations.
Welcome back everyone!!!!
